Doris Reid

Doris Reid was affectionately known as "DothyMae" or "Sister", was born on January 4, 1926, to the late Isaac and Connie Jordan in Como, North Carolina. Doris, married the love of her life, McCoy Reid who preceded her in death. During this union, she was an awesome mama to four daughters; Barshall, Brenda, Corine, and Deborah; and a granddaughter; TyShae, who she took as her very own, eight sons; Craig, Alan, Larry, Don, James, Ronald, Matthew, and Dennis "Fruitcake". Doris attended and graduated from CS Brown High School in Winton, North Carolina. After many years of being a homemaker, and determined to do more, she attended Roanoke-Chowan Community College alongside five of her children and her son-in-law, while volunteering with the local Head Start Program. She graduated with honors, receiving an Associate Degree in Early Childhood. She was recognized by the Roanoke-Chowan News-Herald for her accomplishment. After graduation, she was employed at Riverview Elementary School in Murfreesboro, North Carolina. Doris had a passion for sewing. She was an avid Seamstress, making clothes for her children, family, and friends. On occasion, she made prom dresses and suits for the community to wear for special events. She also enjoyed doing hair. She "could lay some hair down" with a straightening comb. As her health began to fail, she once again became a full-time homemaker. Babysitting then became her love. At her home, you could find not only her own grandchildren but many area children who are still a part of her family. She even helped to nurture generations of children and then on to their children. Doris could be caught enjoying basketball, football, tennis, and golf, and she knew them well. She loved to travel. She took many trips with her sister Adell Williams, visiting Niagara Falls and the Grand Canyons, and many other places. She and her sister Lois Everette made it their tradition to take a yearly trip to New York. Doris loved family and was often the life of the party. She was smart and had no problem with a quick comeback when joking. She loved singing and was a member of the Robert L. Holloman Choir, and the Gospel Choir at Nebo Baptist Church She was also a member of the "Crystallites" Quartet, founded by friends. She enjoyed singing so much, that along with her daughter-in-law, Madie "Rita" Taylor, formed the Gospel Keys Junior. This group included her baby, Craig Reid, and her three grandsons; KK, DayDay, and Maine, as she called them. Doris most importantly loved God and had a personal relationship with Jesus. She often sang "I'm Glad I got My Religion In Time". She encouraged her children to "Get To Know The Man", Jesus! Although our hearts are saddened at her leaving, we have a lot to be grateful for. She blessed us ALL with love, a happy home, good meals, fun, laughter, hugs, and an array of great memories, for 95 years. If she could give one last piece of advice, we are sure it would be, Serve God, Be Obedient, Trust God in All Things, and Lastly, this does not have to be goodbye. So for now I'm signing off cause, "The Price Is Right", and just as sure as as "Ma met Pa" we'll be together again. Doris was preceded in death by her husband, McCoy Reid; four children, Deborah, Ronald, and Matthew Reid, and Dennis "Fruitcake" Taylor, and a grandson, Terrance Sykes. Doris leaves to cherish her memories: her children; Barshall Eley (Anthony), Brenda Cherry (Brian), Corine Sykes (Dorsey, TyShae Melendez (Shamah), Craig Reid (Vera), Alan Reid, Larry Reid, Don Reid, and James Jordan (Catherine); two sisters, Lois Everette (McCoy) and Adell Williams; one great-aunt, Prospina Stewart; two sisters-in-law, Daephine Bishop, and Minnie Lassiter (William), 23 grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends.
