Melvin "Hawk" Johnson Jr.

Melvin "Hawk" Johnson, Jr. was born to the late Melvin Johnson Sr. and Mary Ethel Cofield Johnson on February 11, 1942 in Hertford County, North Carolina and was the oldest of three children born to that union. He was called home to be with the Lord on Monday, May 10, 2021. Melvin received his formal education in the Hertford County public school system where he graduated from Robert L. Vann High School in 1961. After high school, Melvin began working at Roanoke Chowan Hospital. Shortly afterwards he began a career at Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock where he worked for 21.3 years before retiring. Melvin married his best friend, Ann Elizabeth Clay Johnson, on November 27, 1965 and to their union three children were born: Melvin Keith Johnson, Joy Renee Johnson Mitchell and Robin Lynna Johnson. Melvin professed his faith and belief in Jesus Christ early in life and was a member of Calvary Missionary Baptist Church in Ahoskie, North Carolina until his death. He served as a Trustee until his health declined. Melvin will forever be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was affectionately known to many as "Hawk" and was often seen in the community at the Duck Thru Service Station or the local Red Apple talking to friends or truck drivers on his CB radio. He spent a lot of time with his best friend, Jay Felton, laughing and catching up on the local news. He really enjoyed spending time and vacationing with family and watching westerns. In addition to his parents, Melvin was also proceeded in death by his wife, Ann Johnson, his son, Melvin Keith Johnson, his in-laws George R. Clay and Mary Eva Clay and his niece, Mary Jeanette White. Those remaining to treasure every precious moment and share in the legacy of his love are his two daughters, Joy Renee Johnson Mitchell of District Heights, Maryland and Robin Lynna Johnson of the home; one son-in-law, Kirkland Mitchell of Maryland; three grandchildren, Brittany Lynna Clay Mitchell of District Heights, Maryland, Tevan Horton Johnson of Ahoskie, NC and Kevin Horton Johnson of Elizabeth City, NC; two sisters, Retha Mae White of Acworth, Georgia and Dorothy Gale of Ahoskie, NC; one brother-in-law George Irvin Clay of Roxboro, NC (Lorraine); six aunts, Doris Ann Bembury, Mary Cofield, Mychell Cofield Jefferson, Gloria Cofield, Sheila Cofield and Rosa Cofield; three uncles, Bobby Cofield, Douglas Cofield and Kenneth Earl Brown; a niece, Cassandra Johnson; three nephews, Tony Johnson, Jeffery Clay (Nicole) and Nebbie Satterfield; his dedicated caretaker, Shielda "Cherry" Daniels; a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.
