Viola Jeanette Newsome

November 15, 1942 - January 19, 2022

Viola Jeanette Newsome (nee Gatling) aka “Nette” as she was affectionately known by family and friends, was born on November 15, 1942 to the late Viola P. Boone and the late James M. Gatling in Hertford County, NC. She transitioned to her eternal resting place on Wednesday, January 19, 2022 at Sentara Careplex Hospital in Hampton, VA. She graduated from C.S. Brown High School in 1961. At an early age, she joined Parkers Grove Baptist Church in Murfreesboro, NC. She moved to Hampton, VA in 1986 and was employed by Gloria Manufacturing Clothing and later by Walmart from which she retired in 2015. During retirement, she enjoyed many leisurely moments watching westerns, doing crossword puzzles and jig saw puzzles. She leaves to cherish her loving memories four sisters, Shirley Scroggins (Otis) of Junction City, KS, Bettye A. Mason of Hampton, VA, L. Renee’ Oliver of Raleigh, NC and H. Regina White of Virginia Beach, VA. She has four brothers, James A. Gatling, (deceased), Edgar L Boone, (deceased) Louis C. Gatling of New London, CT, and Larry A. Boone of Columbia, MD; five nieces Tiah (“T”) Renee Boler (Courtney) of Wendell, NC, Carmaleshia Britt of Greensboro, NC, Ashleigh Ricks of Norfolk, VA, Makeda Bryant of Virginia Beach, VA, Gina Woolard of Columbia, MD; four nephews Kelvin Parks of Newport News, VA, W. Gregory Mason of Boston, MA, Dominick (“Honeybee”) White of Richmond, VA and Jamahl Lawrie of Wichita, KS and a host of cousins and relatives.
